Recent striking advances in engineering and accelerating internationalization have caused the skills required of engineers to multiply and diversify like never before. To be certain, engineers still need a high degree of technical expertise in their field of study; however, they must also possess an ability to learn and develop, as well as communicative competencies in English, to respond to the demanding changes of a globalizing society. As such, the development of these universally applicable foundational skills has become more important than ever.

Applied Sciences is a division of the Yamaguchi University School of Engineering, existing independently to the seven academic departments that comprise the school. Our mission is to deliver education in the foundational skills of math, physics, and English to all engineering students, regardless of their major.

Here is what sets Applied Sciences apart from other subjects:

  1. Math, Physics, and English courses are taught and/or managed by an expert of that respective field.
  2. Connecting course content with various fields of engineering is a top priority, with instructors aiming to provide students with universally adaptable skills and knowledge.
  3. Instructors coordinate at the subject level rather than class level to establish a more optimal environment for learning.

In addition, faculty members of Applied Sciences directly oversee the research of those wishing to pursue post-graduate studies in the fields of math and physics. Given the low student-instructor ratio relative to other subjects, we are able to offer an individualized, hands-on experience to our students.

"The skills engineers must acquire continue to increase and diversify. Success requires not only a solid grounding in one's field, but also a knowledge of how to learn and English communicative ability. We thus strive to equip our students with the foundational tools they need in order to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world."
